DOMAIN 01

Physical

Speed, strength, mobility, endurance.

The science
Jump height is a summary statistic that hides the thing you actually want. The force-time curve underneath it — eccentric braking rate, time to takeoff, reactive strength, left-right asymmetry — distinguishes an athlete who loads and springs from one who muscles through, and asymmetry is where injury risk sits long before an injury does. Force-velocity profiling separates athletes who lack force from athletes who lack speed, which are opposite training problems that look identical on a stopwatch. And in a developing athlete none of it means anything until it is adjusted for maturation, because a number without a growth curve is noise.
Why it matters
Two athletes jump the same height and are not the same athlete. One is building; the other is compensating and will break down by March. Maturity-adjusted scoring is the difference between developing a late bloomer and cutting one.

DOMAIN 02

Cognitive

Processing, decision-making, pattern recognition.

The science
Expertise research has been consistent for forty years: elite performers are not reacting faster, they are anticipating earlier. Occlusion studies — cutting the footage at the moment of decision — show experts extracting the answer from postural cues before the ball moves. Gaze research finds the same thing in quiet-eye duration. Dynamic attention, working memory, inhibition and task-switching are all measurable, all trainable, and all predictive of performance under speed.
Why it matters
Nobody gets beaten by a faster body as often as they get beaten by an earlier read. The science here is decades old and well established — it has simply never been built into a school day. And it is the domain that transfers furthest: the machinery that reads a defence early is the machinery that reads a problem set.

Skill

Sport technique, execution, consistency.

The science
Skill is not a peak, it is a distribution. Variability across repetitions tells you more than any single best rep, and the distinction between functional and dysfunctional variability is where motor learning research has landed. Skill assessed in isolation also overstates itself — representative task design holds that a capability only counts if it appears under game-like constraints. And the honest test of learning is not acquisition but retention and transfer, measured weeks later, which routinely reverses what a single session appeared to show.
Why it matters
Most programs measure a good day. Consistency under fatigue is what a coach recruits and what the fourth quarter demands. The retention test is the uncomfortable one — it is how you find out whether an athlete learned something or just performed it that afternoon.

Psychological

Focus, resilience, composure under pressure.

The science
Coping skills, performance strategies, motivation and burnout all have validated instruments behind them, with decades of literature. Pressure research holds that the useful measure is not performance under calm or performance under pressure, but the delta between them — and reinvestment theory explains a specific failure mode, the athlete who starts consciously controlling a movement that used to be automatic. Physiological markers like heart-rate variability are read alongside self-report because the body reports strain the athlete will not.
Why it matters
Every academy claims to build mental toughness and almost none of them measures it, which means none of them can tell you whether it worked. A delta between calm and pressure is a number an athlete can train against. It is also the earliest warning system there is — disengagement shows up here months before it shows up in results.
05 // WHAT HAPPENS IF
The point

We don’t teach outcomes. We teach the process that produces them.

A scholarship offer is not a skill. Neither is a state title, a ranking, or a highlight. Those are outputs — they arrive late, they depend on other people, and no athlete has ever controlled one directly. What an athlete does control is the process: how they sleep, how they eat, how they recover, how they prepare, how they respond on the day it goes badly. We teach that process on purpose, measure it, and let the outcomes take care of themselves.

Every input, connected

Most programs treat these as separate departments. They aren’t — they’re one system, and the athlete is where they meet.

TRAINING

What the body can do, built deliberately rather than accumulated by accident.

ACADEMICS

The same discipline, applied to harder problems. Mastery, not seat time.

NUTRITION

Fuel as a variable an athlete learns to control, not a diet imposed on them.

SLEEP

The single highest-leverage recovery input, and the one most athletes get wrong.

RECOVERY

Adaptation happens in the rest, not the session. Trained, not hoped for.

CHARACTER

How you carry a bad day. The most transferable thing on this list.

We train for hard

Adaptation is a stress response. Nothing improves in comfort — not muscle, not memory, not character. So we build difficulty into the week deliberately, at a dose the athlete can absorb, and then we let them sit in it.

Which means failure is not an accident here. It is the instrument. An athlete who never misses is not being asked enough. We want the miss early, in a room where it costs nothing, with someone standing beside them who can name what happened and what to change. That is a very different experience from failing for the first time at eighteen with something real on the line.

Learning research calls these desirable difficulties — conditions that make performance worse today and learning better permanently. Most programs optimise for how the session looks. We optimise for what survives it.

Most of our athletes will not play professionally. Every one of them will face something hard.

An athlete who has learned to run their own process — to see the inputs, adjust one at a time, tolerate a bad stretch without abandoning the plan, and come back the next day — has learned something that outlasts their sport by fifty years. That is what we are actually building. The athletics are the curriculum. Becoming elite at life is the subject.
